A GUIDE TO INEXPENSIVE GIFT GIVING FOR A SPECIAL SENIOR IN YOUR LIFE

December 11, 2009

The holiday season is here, and so is the stress that comes with gift-giving. To help you shop for the senior adult in your life, we’ve polled our residents for holiday gift ideas. Residents of The Blakeford at Green Hills gave a variety of answers, but there are some gifts that seemed to be mentioned again and again.

  • Beautifying gifts are great for making your mother or grandmother feel special and pampered. Many Blakeford residents requested lotions, cosmetics or gift certificates for a manicure or massage at a local beauty salon or massage school. To make the gift even more special, why not set up an appointment for two? You and your loved one can bond over inexpensive spa treatment options.
  • Some of the seniors we polled listed hobby-related items as their favorite gifts. If your father or favorite uncle loves to read, get him a book you think he would like. If he is farsighted, try to find a large-print copy. You can find used books at a local thrift store and give your loved one a bundle of stories for the price of one new book.
  • If your grandmother enjoys her garden, get her some flower bulbs to plant or a potted plant to keep in her house. You can find free potting soil at some local garden centers, and even give her a potted plant that came from your own home garden.
  • We also found a strong desire to be more connected with their families and friends. Why not help your parents or grandparents set up a Facebook or email account to help keep them in touch with their loved ones? Computer lessons are a great way to spend time together while teaching a valuable skill (and they only cost you time).
Hopefully these tips have helped you figure out that perfect, inexpensive gift for your loved one. Remember, no matter what you end up giving them, it’s time with you that many seniors value the most. Happy holidays!
